Pico Toning Seoul | Does Pico Toning Work and Can You Get It in Summer?
Pico toning has become one of the most frequently discussed laser treatments among individuals looking to improve pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and overall skin clarity.
At LIJIN, an English-speaking Seoul skin clinic in Myeongdong, patients often ask similar questions during consultation:
“Will one session be enough?”
“How many treatments do I need?”
“Can I have Pico toning during summer?”
“Is the treatment painful?”
Hello, I’m Dr. Youjoo Hwang, Chief Director of LIJIN Clinic.
Because Pico toning is widely used for pigmentation concerns, many people are familiar with the name. However, there are still many misconceptions regarding how the treatment works and what kind of results should realistically be expected.
Today, I'd like to answer six of the most common questions we hear about Pico toning during consultation.
What Is Pico Toning?
Pico toning is a laser treatment that uses ultra-short picosecond pulses to target melanin pigment within the skin.
Because the laser energy is delivered in extremely brief pulses, pigment can be fragmented into smaller particles while minimizing unnecessary heat exposure to surrounding tissue.
Pico toning is commonly considered for concerns such as:
✔️ Melasma
✔️ Sun spots
✔️ Freckles
✔️ Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
✔️ Uneven skin tone
One important point to understand is that Pico toning is not designed to remove pigmentation in a single session.
Particularly for melasma, which often involves deeper pigment and a tendency to recur, a gradual and controlled treatment approach is usually preferred.
For this reason, pigmentation treatment is often viewed as a process of progressive improvement rather than immediate removal.
Will One Session Make a Difference?
This is probably the question we hear most often.
The answer is that some individuals may notice subtle improvements after a single treatment.
For example, patients sometimes describe:
✔️ Brighter-looking skin
✔️ Improved skin clarity
✔️ A more even complexion
However, deeper pigmentation concerns often require multiple treatment sessions.
Pigment particles that have been fragmented by the laser must gradually be processed and cleared by the body over time.
Because of this, meaningful pigmentation improvement typically develops gradually rather than immediately.
During consultation, I often explain that successful pigmentation treatment is usually about safely fading pigment over time rather than removing it as quickly as possible.
How Many Sessions Are Usually Needed?
There is no single answer that applies to everyone.
The number of sessions depends on several factors, including:
✔️ Type of pigmentation
✔️ Depth of pigment
✔️ Skin condition
✔️ Treatment response
For example, treatment planning for superficial sun spots may differ significantly from treatment planning for melasma.
In many cases, multiple sessions are recommended as part of a longer-term pigmentation management strategy.
Particularly for melasma, maintenance and long-term care often play an important role in achieving stable results.
Is Pico Toning Painful?
Pain perception varies from person to person.
Many patients describe the sensation as similar to a light snapping feeling against the skin.
While some temporary discomfort may occur during treatment, most individuals find the procedure tolerable without significant difficulty.
Areas with thinner skin, such as the forehead or cheekbones, may feel slightly more sensitive.
For this reason, treatment settings are adjusted according to skin condition and individual comfort level.
Can I Have Pico Toning During Summer?
Yes.
One of the most common misconceptions is that pigmentation lasers should only be performed during autumn or winter.
In reality, Pico toning can be performed throughout the year, including during summer.
The key consideration is not the season itself, but post-treatment sun protection.
Following treatment, the skin may become temporarily more sensitive to ultraviolet exposure.
Without proper sun protection, pigment activity may be stimulated again, potentially affecting treatment outcomes.
For this reason, diligent sunscreen use and UV protection become especially important during the summer months.
The treatment itself is not restricted by season, but aftercare becomes even more important when UV exposure is higher.
What Should I Do After Treatment?
Post-treatment care plays an important role in overall results.
The two most important recommendations are:
✔️ Consistent sun protection
✔️ Adequate skin hydration
Some individuals may experience temporary redness or warmth immediately after treatment, but these reactions typically improve naturally.
Because the skin can be temporarily more sensitive, maintaining proper hydration and avoiding unnecessary irritation may be beneficial.
If mild flaking or crusting occurs, it is generally best not to pick or remove it prematurely.
As with many pigmentation treatments, outcomes are influenced not only by the laser itself but also by how the skin is cared for afterward.
Personalized Pigmentation Treatment at LIJIN
Even when the same laser device is used, treatment outcomes may vary depending on:
✔️ Skin type
✔️ Pigmentation characteristics
✔️ Energy settings
✔️ Treatment intervals
✔️ Overall treatment planning
Rather than focusing solely on stronger laser settings, we believe the most important step is accurately assessing the skin and developing an individualized treatment strategy.
If pigmentation concerns such as melasma, freckles, sun spots, or uneven skin tone have been affecting your confidence, a personalized consultation may help determine the most appropriate approach for your skin.
